The global organic personal care products market is expected to expand at a strong CAGR of 9.3% between 2014 and 2020, according to a report from Transparency Market Research. In 2013, the global organic personal care products market was estimated at $8.36 billion and by 2020 the market is expected to be valued at $15.69 billion. North America led the global market in 2013, according to the report, with a market share of more than 34.9% in terms of consumption. The North America market is witnessing rapid growth due to increasing awareness among consumers about the benefits of organic products. This regional market also benefits from the entry of new multinational companies that are improving the visibility and availability of these products. In terms of demand, Europe followed North America and held about 28.9% of the global organic personal care products market in 2013. Germany and France stood out as the primary consumers of organic personal care products in Europe. Germany held a 17.1% market share, while France held a 13.6% share in Europe in 2013. Japan is predicted to demonstrate the fastest growth globally. In 2013, Japan accounted for around 42.6% of demand from the Asia-Pacific organic personal care products market. This high growth is attributed to the well-engrained belief among consumers in this region that organic and natural remedies are good for their health. This has made it easier for companies to market organic personal care products in the region. Apart from the increasing health awareness about these products, the global organic personal care products market will be driven by the increase in distribution channels and the number of new product launches. Several retailers in the U.K. are focusing on exports for higher growth. The French market experienced the highest number of new product launches in the past few years. Several large cosmetic firms have introduced organic and natural products in Europe and particularly France. For instance, L’Oreal is currently marketing a wide range of products under the brand names Mixa, Biotherm, Garnier and Ushuaïa. Furthermore, the mass market distribution of organic personal care products has increased significantly worldwide. The global market is hampered by the intensifying competition offered by upcoming brands, pushing established brands to explore new distribution channels. In addition, the short shelf life and high cost associated with organic personal care products is challenging. By product, the market is divided into oral care, cosmetics, hair care, skin care and others. Galderma Enters Nutraceutical Market A global leader committed to dermatology and skin health, Galderma has entered the nutraceutical market through the acquisition of certain assets of Inneov Group. Relevant Inneov products are marketed under the brand names Nutri-Care D, Duocap, Densilogy, Densilogy Men, Fermete, Fermete Aox, Firmness, Pre-Hyaluron 465, Solar and Sun Sensitivity. “The nutraceutical category has a strong fit with our self-medication business. Many of the Innéov brands are complementary to our existing portfolio of skin health medical solutions,” said Stuart Raetzman, CEO of Galderma. “We look forward to expanding our range of nutraceutical products and to serving consumers’ needs around the world.” “Partnering with healthcare professionals to meet the needs of dermatology patients is Galderma’s unique focus,” added Janusz Czernielewski, chief medical officer of Galderma. “Backed by science and clinical evidence and recommended by healthcare professionals, the nutraceutical products can play an important role in the health of skin, hair and nails throughout the course of people’s lives.” On April 24 Nestlé Skin Health announced that Galderma, its company focused on medical solutions, had entered into an agreement under which it will acquire certain assets of Innéov Group, contingent upon competition authority clearance. Galderma is committed to delivering innovative medical solutions to meet the dermatological needs of people throughout their lifetime while serving healthcare professionals around the world. The company’s product portfolio is available in 80 countries and treats a range of dermatological conditions including: acne, rosacea, nail mycosis, psoriasis and steroid-responsive dermatoses, pigmentary disorders, skin cancer and medical solutions for skin senescence. Strategic brands include Epiduo, Oracea, Differin, Mirvaso, Soolantra, Tri-Luma, Loceryl, Benzac, Cetaphil, Excipial, Daylong, Metvix, Azzalure/Dysport, Restylane and Emervel. Fruit d’Or Launches Cran Bella for Beauty from Within Fruit d’Or has launched Cran Bella, a proprietary cranberry seed oil ingredient for skin support and anti-aging supplements. Cran Bella is positioned expressly for beauty and overall health from the inside out. “Cran Bella cranberry seed oil is one of the most unsaturated oils on the market, making it an ideal moisturizing ingredient,” explained Stephen Lukawski, director of business development and sales for Fruit d’Or. “With a composition of 85% fatty acids, this fruit oil may protect and re-establish the protective lipid barrier of the skin. Excellent oxidative stability, a pleasant odor and texture, and the ideal 1:1 ratio of omega-3 to omega-6, cranberry seed oil combined with omega-9 is perfect for skin care applications.” Essential fatty acids are nourishing, protective, aid in the formation and maintenance of cellular membranes and are essential to the formation of prostaglandins to reduce inflammation. Cran Bella cranberry seed oil contains a unique combination of omega-3-6-9. Cold-pressed extraction retains the natural antioxidants that are abundant in cranberry seed oil. A high concentration of polyphenols, rich in anthocyanins, tocopherols and tocotrienols all aid in the reversal of and support against UV-mediated skin damage, according to the company. Moreover, Cran Bella’s high phytosterol content may enhance the protection and repair of damaged tissue, soothe exposure-induced inflammation and reduce itchiness in irritated skin. Research Suggests Benefits of Meriva on Psoriasis Management A clinical study carried out by Italian researchers at the Department of Surgery and Translational Medicine, University of Florence, demonstrated that supplementation with Meriva, a proprietary lecithin-based delivery system of curcumin from Indena, may be effective as a complementary support in management of skin disorders. In this single-dose, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study 63 subjects with mild-to-moderate psoriasis vulgaris (PASI <10) were randomly divided into two groups treated with topical steroids and orally with Meriva, or with topical steroids alone, both for 12 weeks. Researchers measured the quality of life and health benefits and the effects of the treatment on the serum levels of IL-17 and IL-22 that are thought to play a major role in this disorder. Data from the study demonstrated that Meriva may be regarded as a safe and well-tolerated supplementation for the complementary support of subjects treated with topical steroids. Among the several biological effects of curcumin, the ability to down-regulate the T cell-mediated process, and in particular the Th22 pathway, may be considered one of the major mechanisms by which Meriva supports skin dysfunction recovery, according to researchers. “We welcome the promising results of Meriva in this new area, and the chance to improve the quality of life for people affected by this troublesome condition,” said Antonella Riva, senior scientific researcher at Indena. Nature’s Bounty Launches Women’s Multivitamin Gummies Nature’s Bounty has added Women’s Multivitamin Gummies to its Optimal Solutions health, beauty and wellness line. This supplement helps provide women with the nutrients needed to support a healthy, strong and beautiful body, according to the company. “With women’s health and beauty at the core of our mission, we strive to create the perfect blend of accessibility and convenience without compromising nutritional value,” said Derek Bowen, senior vice president and general manager of Nature’s Bounty. “The new Optimal Solutions Women’s Multivitamin Gummies are a comprehensive way for women to receive the daily nutrients that help support them throughout the various stages of their lives.” The product contains more than 10 important nutrients, which are delivered in a raspberry flavored gummy. Specifically formulated with calcium, vitamins D and B for bone and immune health, as well as energy support, the new multivitamin offers key ingredients to help support women’s nutritional needs. Additionally, each daily serving of the Women’s Multivitamin Gummies contains 50 mg of collagen. PLN Launches Skin Care Products to Support Healthy Aging Private Label Nutraceuticals (PLN), a contract manufacturer of a broad range of nutritional supplements, has added two new products to its private label skin care line. The new PLN Plant Super Stem Cell Cream leverages potent plant stem cells including Malus domestica fruit cell culture extract, Iris padilla leaf extract and Nymphaea caerulea leaf extract. Plant stem cells are extracted from the stems themselves, and have the potential to transform themselves into other types of cells, such as human skin cells. All skin requires new cells in order to repair damage, and people produce fewer new skin cells as they age. These advanced ingredients have been shown to encourage healthy skin cell growth, and repair skin damage to provide healthy aging support, according to the company. PLN’s new Phytoceramide Cream provides hydration, and includes rosemary and balm mint extracts. Ceramides are the hormones required to maintain moisture in the skin cells. As individuals age, the ability to produce these hormones is greatly reduced. This often results in increased dryness, wrinkles, cracks and irritation in the skin. Using naturally extracted ceramides from plants, the PLN Phytoceramide Cream safely and effectively delivers high-quality ceramides back into the skin, the company claimed. Private Label Nutraceuticals’ makes these products available in one-ounce containers to its clients for custom labeling, packaging and fulfillment. Vital Surge Supplement Designed to Control Cellular Aging Nutraceutical company Vital Surge has released its flagship product of the same name. The whole-body nutricosmetic has been designed to combat the effects of aging on the cellular level while offering enhanced health benefits, including reduced inflammation, improved circulation and healthier skin, hair and nails. “While the cosmetics industry generates billions in revenue, product developers have taken a shortsighted view of how to achieve beauty in the modern age,” said Vital Surge CEO Chris Sargent. “At Vital Surge, our goal is to create lasting beauty through wellness. That begins with only choosing the best and safest possible ingredients as the foundation for real beauty.” Most beauty products today treat the symptoms rather than the causes of physiological aging, he added. Topical agents are only marginally effective because they seldom penetrate to the deepest layers of the skin where they could be optimally effective. Vital Surge, a chewable tablet, acts from the inside-out to slow the biological aging process at the cellular level, according to the company. In developing the company’s flagship product over the course of two years, the creators of Vital Surge identified the 10 leading factors in biological aging, formulating a potent solution that addresses each of those factors. The all-natural ingredients in the product have been selected after a lengthy and thorough process of scientific research and testing. Clinically proven ingredients like pterostilbene and citrulline work together to ward off both the external and internal mechanisms that damage cells and accelerate aging. Additionally, Vital Surge works equally well for people of all ages. The company subscribes to a holistic view of wellness that looks beyond just the appearance of skin, hair and nails to consider the healthy, optimal functioning of the entire body. Vitamin B 3 May Reduce Risk of Skin Cancers Nicotinamide (vitamin B3) enhances DNA repair and prevents cutaneous immune suppression after ultraviolet (UV) radiation exposure. It reduces photocarcinogenesis in mice, and human non-melanoma skin cancers (NMSC) in Phase 2 clinical trials. Researchers reported the outcomes of the Phase 3 Oral Nicotinamide to Reduce Actinic Cancer (ONTRAC) Study in the Journal of Clinical Oncology this year. ONTRAC was a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial conducted in two tertiary treatment centers in Sydney, Australia from 2012-2014. A total of 386 immune competent participants with ≥ 2 histologically-confirmed NMSC in the past 5 years were randomized (1:1) to oral nicotinamide 500 mg bd (NIC) or matched placebo (PBO) for 12 months. The primary endpoint was the number of new NMSCs to 12 months. Secondary endpoints included number of squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs), basal cell carcinomas (BCCs), and actinic keratoses (AKs) to 12 months. Skin reviews by dermatologists were performed. The sample size provided 90% power to detect a 33% difference in NMSC rates. Analysis was by intention-to-treat. The mean age of study population was 66 years, the mean number of NMSC in the past 5 years was 8, and 63% were men. Treatment discontinuation rates were 9% for PBO versus 10% for NIC. 99% of patients underwent at least one post-baseline skin assessment. The average NMSC rate was significantly lower for NIC (1.77) than PBO (2.42). The estimated relative rate reduction (RRR) was 0.23 (95% CI: 0.04 to 0.38, p = 0.02) adjusting for center and NMSC history, and 0.27 (95% CI: 0.05 to 0.44; p = 0.02) with no adjustment. Treatment effects of comparable magnitude were found for both BCCs (RRR = 0.20, 95% CI: -0.06 to 0.39, p = 0.1) and SCCs (RRR = 0.30, 95% CI: 0 to 0.51, p = 0.05). AK counts were reduced for NIC compared to PBO by 11% at 3 months (p = 0.01), 14% at 6 months (p < 0.001), 20% at 9 months (p < 0.0001) and 13% at 12 months (p < 0.005). There were no clinically relevant differences in adverse event rates between the two arms. Researchers concluded nicotinamide reduces NMSC formation in high-risk patients and is well tolerated. Furthermore, it is widely accessible as an inexpensive over-the-counter vitamin supplement and presents a new chemopreventive opportunity against NMSCs that is readily translatable into clinical practice. L’dara Debuts New Skin Supplement Following the success of its Advanced Anti-Aging Serum, L’dara has launched L’dara Within Advanced Age-Defying Skin Supplement, which features a patent-pending LBP-5 Complex, a compound derived from the goji berry. In 2007, L’dara scientists discovered that the ingestion of goji juice containing the bioactive LBP-5 polysaccharide resulted in significant benefits for the skin. This discovery led to the development of the LBP-5 Complex, L’dara Advanced Ant-Aging Serum and, ultimately, the new L’dara Within Advanced Age-Defying Supplement. In studies, goji with LBP-5 has been shown to promote healthy skin by significantly increasing blood levels of three important antioxidants: haem oxygenase-1, glutathione peroxidase and superoxide dismutase. Additionally, goji with LBP-5 has been shown to reduce free-radical activity. L’dara’s proprietary LBP-5 Complex is synergized with a precise combination of science-backed ingredients, including Ceramin-L ceramides, grape seed extract, MSM (methylsulfonylmethane), trans-pterostilbene, vitamin C and copper. L’dara Within helps to give skin a more youthful and radiant appearance, according to the company. A clinical study involving 60 people showed multiple anti-aging results in 60 days. Specifically, according to the company, participants saw a reduction in the appearance of wrinkles (average 19% decrease), an increase in skin moisture (average 37% increase), an increase in skin smoothness (average 34% increase), a decrease in skin roughness (average 64% decrease) and an increase in skin elasticity (average 36% increase). L’dara Within is designed for use in combination with L’dara Advanced Anti-Aging Serum for optimal results, the company said.
